What is Rosacea?
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that primarily affects the face, causing redness, visible blood vessels, and sometimes small, red, pus-filled bumps. It often develops gradually and can be mistaken for acne, eczema, or an allergic reaction. While the exact cause of rosacea is unknown, it tends to affect individuals with fair skin and typically begins after the age of 30.
Causes of Rosacea:
Genetics – Most rosacea sufferers have a close relative who also suffers from the condition, although it is not yet clear how it is passed on.
H. pylori bacteria – Found in the gut, this bacteria has been linked to rosacea as it produces a protein which dilates the blood vessels.
Abnormal Blood Vessels – Abnormalities in the facial blood vessels are considered a major contributing factor when it comes to rosacea.
Demodex folliculorum (microscopic mites) – Usually harmless, these microscopic mites appear in a far larger number on the skin of rosacea sufferers, indicating that they play a role in causing the condition.
Types of Rosacea
Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR):
Persistent redness and visible blood vessels.
Papulopustular Rosacea:
Redness with acne-like breakouts.
Phymatous Rosacea:
Thickened, bumpy skin, especially on the nose.

Symptoms primarily affecting the eyes.
Symptoms of Rosacea
The symptoms vary between individuals and can worsen over time if untreated. Common signs include:
1) Facial Redness (Erythema):
- Persistent redness, especially on the cheeks, nose, forehead, and chin.
- May resemble a sunburn or blush that doesn’t fade.
2) Visible Blood Vessels (Telangiectasia):
- Tiny, broken blood vessels visible on the surface of the skin
3) Bumps and Pimples
- Small, red, swollen bumps or pus-filled pimples that resemble acne.
- These can cause burning or stinging sensations.
4) Thickened Skin
- Over time, the skin, especially on the nose, can thicken and take on a bumpy texture (a condition known as rhinophyma).
- More common in men than women.
5) Eye Problems (Ocular Rosacea):
- Watery, bloodshot, or irritated eyes.
- Grittiness or burning sensation.
- In severe cases, it may affect vision.
6) Flushing:
- Episodes of sudden, intense redness triggered by environmental or emotional factors.
Triggers for Flare-Ups
Rosacea symptoms can worsen due to specific triggers, which vary among individuals. Common triggers include:
- Weather: Extreme heat, cold, wind, or humidity.
- Diet: Spicy foods, alcohol (especially red wine), hot beverages.
- Lifestyle: Stress, vigorous exercise, or lack of sleep.
- Skin Products: Harsh cleansers, alcohol-based products, or irritating ingredients.
