Common types of vascular birthmarks are:

1) Mascular Stains (Salmon patches)

• Apperance: Flat, pink or red marks
• Common Names: Stork bites (neck) angel kisses (forehead or eyelids)
• Characteristics: Often fade over time, especially those on the face

2) Hemangiomas

• Apperance: Raised, bright red marks (superficial) or bluish-purple marks (deep)
• Characteristics: Grow rapidly during the first year of life then strink and fade with age
• Types: Superficial Hemangiomas (strawberry marks) Bright red and raised.
• Types: Deep Hemangiomas – Bluish and may involve deeper tissue

3) Port-Wine Stains

• Apperance: Flat, pink, red or purple marks that may darken and thicken with age
• Location: Commonly on the face, neck, arms or legs
• Characteristics: Do not fade over time and may require treatment for cosmetic or medical reasons
• Associated Conditions: Can be linked to syndromes like Sturge-Weber syndromw if oncertain areas of the face

Common Types of Pigmented Birthmarks

1) Cafe-au-Lait Spots

• Apperance: Light brown to dark brown flat patches
• Characteristics: Typically harmless but may indicate neurofibromatosis if there are multiple spots

2) Mongolian Spots

• Apperance: Bluish-gray marks resembling bruises
• Location: Common on the lower back and buttocks
• Characteristics: More common in darker-skinned babies and usually fade by early childhood

3) Congenital Moles (Nevus)

• Apperance: Dark, raised or flat moles present at birth
• Charcteristics: May vary in size and colour, larger congential moles may carry a slight higher risk of developing in melanoma

4) Becker’s Nevus

• Apperance: A large, irregularly shaped, dark brown patch often with increaed hair growth
• Characteristics: Typically appears during adolescence

Causes of Birthmarks

The exact cause of most birthmarks is unknown, but they are generally thought to result from:

Vascular Development Issues: Abnormal blood vessel formation or dilation during fetal development.
Pigment Cell Clustering: Irregular growth of melanocytes or other skin cells.
Genetic Factors: Some birthmarks may have a genetic component or be associated with specific syndromes.
